Why Flat Rate Cards Beat Category-Spend Cards for Construction Business Owners

According to our data, construction businesses had a spend total of approximately $11.8 million over the course of a few months.

When broken down, the data reveals that spend is diffuse. There’s no one category that dominates in the construction industry. Here’s a look at average spend across each major spending category:

  • Dining: 17%
  • Business Services: 12%
  • Auto: 11%
  • Health: 10%
  • Home/Office Expenses: 10%
  • Telecom/Utilities Spend: 9%
  • Retail: 8%

If we look more closely at category-spend business credit cards, we’ll find that rewards aren’t as generous as one may be led to believe.

  • Amex Gold card members are only earning about 1.59% cash back in rewards. This does jump up to around 2.21% cash back when valuing membership rewards at travel-transfer rates, but only under this condition.
  • 1.5% cash back business credit cards and U.S. Bank Triple Cash cards are yielding about the stated amount in rewards (sometimes a bit lower).
  • Meanwhile, the Chase Ink Cash and the Chase Ink Preferred cards only yielded 1.40% and 1.15% in rewards, respectively.

A flat-rate card with an effective rate of 2.00% cash back is going to offer better rewards in comparison to category-spend cards for construction businesses that follow these spend patterns. This is true even with a best-case return, which may only be as high as around 1.68%.

Best Business Credit Cards for Construction Compared

1. Wells Fargo Signify Business Cash: Best Rewards for Construction

Wells Fargo Signify Card

The Wells Fargo Signify Business Cash card is the business credit card to spring for if you operate a construction company.

The Wells Fargo Signify Business Cash card offers 2% unlimited cash back without any spending categories or caps. Every time you swipe your card for your business, you’re going to be saving money.

There’s no annual fee and no employee card fees, allowing you to maximize savings.

The Wells Fargo Signify Business Cash card is also defined by:

  • A $500 cash bonus when you spend $5,000 in purchases in the first three months after account opening.
  • 0% introductory APR for 12 months. Then, 16.99% to 24.99% variable APR.
  • Travel benefits with card memberships. This includes Priority Pass to 1,300 participating airport lounges and common carrier travel accident insurance.

You can redeem your rewards as a statement credit.

2. FairFigure Lift Card: Best for Bad Credit/Building Business Credit

FairFigure Lift Card

Bad credit can be a major obstacle for a new construction company. One card that helps you secure funding now without hassle and work toward stronger financing opportunities is the FairFigure Lift Card.

The FairFigure Lift Card is a business card with no personal credit check, no personal guarantee, and no paperwork. There’s also no security deposit, as you’d have with a secured business credit card.

If you’ve been looking for an EIN only business credit card, this is a great traditional credit card alternative.

The main factors that play a role in approval are time in business and revenue. As long as you’ve been in business for at least three months and generate at least $2,500 a month, you can unlock revenue-based funding.

The FairFigure Lift Card does come with its fair share of benefits aside from boosting cash flow. Notably, you receive:

  • Reports to the Business Credit Bureaus: Your FairFigure Lift Card payments are reported to each business credit bureau listed here: Dun and Bradstreet, Equifax Business, Experian Business, Creditsafe, and the SBFE. Build your business credit score faster than with any other card on the market!
  • Flexible Payback Terms: Choose between paying off your card every four weeks or eight weeks. Other business credit cards with no personal credit check won’t offer this.
  • Protect Your Personal Credit: FairFigure doesn’t report card payments to the personal credit bureaus. And, as mentioned above, it doesn’t check your personal credit in the application process, so you can avoid a hard inquiry which damages your personal credit.
  • Get Funded While You Build Business Credit: Most credit builder cards require a security deposit. Rather than make you spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to build your business credit, we’ll actually fund you while you’re building it.

3. American Express Blue Business Cash: Best Amex for Cash Rewards

American Express Blue Business Cash

If you’re already a part of the Amex ecosystem, you might consider the American Express Blue Business Cash card.

The American Express Blue Business Cash card is a solid choice in that it does offer 2% cash back. However, unlike the Wells Fargo Signify Card, this is not unlimited. You only get 2% cash back on eligible purchases up to $50,000 per calendar year.

After that, the rate drops to 1% cash back, which is automatically credited to your statement. Most contractors are likely to reach the $50,000/year threshold fairly quickly.

What else can you expect with this card? Here’s what to know before you apply:

  • Statement Credit Bonus: The American Express Blue Business Cash offers a $250 statement credit after spending $3,000 in the first three months after account opening.
  • Intro APR Promo: Benefit from 0% introductory APR on purchases for the first 12 months after account opening. Variable APR will range from 16.99% to 28.74% after that. Thankfully, there’s no annual fee.
  • Amex Apply With Confidence: Amex’s Apply With Confidence means that your personal credit score won’t be affected. You can see if you’re a good fit before applying for the card and getting a hard credit pull.

4. U.S. Bank Triple Cash: Best No-Fee Options for Contractors with High Fuel and Phone Spends

US Bank Triple Cash

As we said above, the best business credit cards tend to be flat-rate business credit cards. However, there are always exceptions to the rule. If you have high fuel and phone spend, the U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards Visa Business Card might be a good fit for you.

The U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards Visa Business Card offers 3% cash back on the following categories:

  • Gas and EV charging stations (only 3% cash back on transactions up to $200).
  • Office supply stores.
  • Cell phone service providers.
  • Restaurants.

Otherwise, the U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards Visa Business Card offers 1% cash back to small businesses on all eligible purchases.

The best part? The U.S. Bank Triple Cash Rewards Visa Business Card comes with no annual fee. If it doesn’t work out for you, there’s no money wasted along the way.

Other features of this business credit card include:

  • A $100 credit for specific recurring software subscriptions, like FreshBooks or QuickBooks. Boost cash flow and save money on a common business expense.
  • 0% intro APR for 12 months after account opening. Afterward, variable APR ranges from 17.49% to 26.49%.
  • Access to U.S. Bank’s Spend Management platform.
  • 5% cash back on prepaid hotels and car rentals booked through U.S. Bank’s Travel Center.
  • ExtendPay Plans that help you stretch credit card payments out for certain purchases. You get a $0 fee offer for ExtendPay Plans for the first 60 days after account opening.

5. Home Depot Pro Xtra Credit Card: Best for Home Depot Purchases

Home Depot Pro Xtra Credit Card

Construction business owners might find themselves shopping frequently at certain stores. For example, it’s highly likely construction contractors will find themselves in Home Depot or Lowe’s. If you shop at the former, consider the Home Depot Pro Xtra Credit Card.

The Home Depot Pro Xtra Credit Card, powered by Citi, is the perfect fit for Home Depot members. It helps you earn Home Depot perks 4x faster. The Pro Xtra loyalty program itself also helps you tap into exclusive promotions and discounts.

The Home Depot Pro Xtra Credit Card comes with no annual fee, $0 liability on unauthorized charges, and identity theft protection.

They also have a limited-time promotion that will help you save $100 on your first purchase after account opening.

The variable APR for this business credit card is 21.99%. If you live in Georgia or North Carolina, you get a more favorable rate, sitting at 15.00%. This can jump up to 26.99% or 20.00% if you miss your minimum payment and leave it unpaid for at least a month.

If you’re looking for more support in your business, you should also look at Home Depot’s Commercial accounts. These offer zero-interest net 60 terms, which can be a useful tool.

6. My Lowe's Pro Rewards Business Credit Card: Best for Lowe's Purchases

My Lowes Pro Rewards Business Credit Card

The previous Lowe’s Business Rewards Card was sunsetted in April of 2026. However, they do have a new card to take advantage of: The MyLowe’s Pro Rewards American Express Card. It’s a good option for those who need a construction credit card.

The MyLowe’s Pro Rewards American Express Card comes with a wealth of benefits, including:

  • 5% savings every day on eligible Lowe’s purchases.
  • 365-day returns.
  • The ability to upgrade to Platinum Pro Status. This can earn you 1.25 points per dollar spent at Lowe’s.
  • 2 points per dollar on eligible purchases made at restaurants, office supply stores, and wireless service providers.
  • 1 point per dollar on all other eligible purchases.
  • No annual fee.
  • 20% off your first eligible in-store purchase after account opening (up to $100 discount).
  • 3 points per dollar on Lowe’s Qualifying purchases for the first six months after account opening.

The new MyLowe’s Pro Rewards card does offer flexible payment options. However, they don’t list what the variable APR is for the card. They also don’t offer extended payment terms, as you could expect with the Lowe’s Commercial Account Credit Card.

You can have up to 99 employee cards at a time.

7. American Express Blue Business Plus: Great for Travel Points

American Express Blue Business Plus

If you find yourself on the go frequently, it makes sense to opt for a business credit card that offers travel benefits. While you aren’t getting travel benefits directly, per se, you might wish to look into the American Express Blue Business Plus Card.

The American Express Blue Business Plus card comes with similar benefits to our first Amex card: 2x rewards points on eligible purchases up to $50,000 per calendar year. Then, 1x rewards points on all other eligible purchases.

The unique part of this card comes in the form of transferable membership rewards. You can actually transfer your points to 19 rewards program partners. You can also transfer them to participating brands (Amazon, Best Buy, GrubHub).

Beyond that, the American Express Blue Business Plus business credit card offers:

  • 15,000 membership points when you spend at least $3,000 within three months of account opening.
  • 0% APR for 12 months after account opening. Then, 16.99% to 28.74% variable APR.

8. Chase Ink Unlimited: Strong Cash-Back Option

Chase Ink Unlimited

The Chase Ink Unlimited business credit card is a strong cash-back option packed with rewards. If you want to get a cash flow confusion while working within the Chase ecosystem, consider this card.

The main draw of the Chase Ink Unlimited card is its unlimited 1.5% cash back on every business purchase. While a limited-time promo at the time of writing, cardholders can also get 5% cash back on Lyft rides through September 30, 2027.

Chase’s rewards center allows you to claim your rewards in many different ways. You aren’t limited to just a statement credit. You can redeem your rewards for cash, gift card products, travel, and more.

  • $750 cash back after you spend $6,000 on purchases within three months of account opening.

9. Bank of America Unlimited Cash: Strong Cash-Back Option

Bank of America Unlimited Cash

If you’re looking for a cash-back card similar in nature to the Chase Ink Unlimited card, another option is the Bank of America Unlimited Cash business credit card.

The Bank of America Unlimited Cash card offers 1.5% unlimited cash back on all purchases, with no set expiration on cash rewards so long as your account remains open. You can get up to 5.25% cash back with Preferred Rewards banking.

Bank of America also allows you to see if you pre-qualify rather than having to apply blindly. This ensures your credit doesn’t take a hit from a hard pull, and that you don’t waste your time on an application for a business cash unlimited card you don’t qualify for.

Among these features, the Bank of America Unlimited Cash business credit card comes with:

  • No annual fee.
  • A $250 cash rewards bonus after spending at least $1,000 within 90 days of account opening.

  • 3% balance transfer fee for 60 days after account opening. 5% afterward.

10. Capital One Spark Classic: Best for Fair Credit

Capital One Spark Classic

Fair credit can sometimes hold you back as a small business owner. This is especially true with card issuers like Chase, American Express, and Bank of America. Most business credit cards require good credit for approval. One exception is the Capital One Spark Classic card.

Startup business credit cards with no credit EIN only aren’t the only cards that can get you in the door and help you earn rewards. The Capital One Spark Classic card offers 1% unlimited cash back on every purchase, all along with no annual fee and no expiration dates.

The Capital One Spark Classic business credit card boasts free business-grade benefits, credit-building support, and a fast application process that will only take you 10 minutes to complete.

There are some trade-offs, however. It’s the best credit card for fair credit, but you’re going to receive a higher variable APR of 28.99% with your card. You’ll also likely get a lower credit limit.
